Area Description
The Huillinco and Cucao lakes, located in the Chonchi commune, are the largest lakes on Chiloé Island and were declared a Nature Sanctuary in 2021. Over 80 species of birds are housed here, some of which are endemic subspecies to the island. Mammals such as the southern river otter, nutria, Darwin's fox, and pudu can also be found, among others. In terms of flora, it is possible to find alerces (Fitzroya), mañíos (Podocarpus), and Chiloé coihue (Nothofagus nitida).
The Cucao basin, where Huillinco Lake is located, forms a unique tourist product that includes Chiloé National Park, adjacent to the Nature Sanctuary, as one of its main attractions. This area is recognized at the provincial level for receiving the most visitors during the summer season.
